Community Notice: Wildfire Safety & Landscape Maintenance

Purgatory Metro District is asking all homeowners to help protect our pristine mountain community. Warmer, drier seasons mean we must stay proactive against wildfires and keep our neighborhood beautiful.

🔥 1. Create Defensible Space

Protecting your home from wildfire is a shared responsibility. You are required to maintain defensive zones around your property:

  • 0 to 15 Feet (From Eaves): No flammable vegetation or ground cover (including wood mulch) is permitted. Stick to low-growing shrubs only.
  • Under Decks: Use gravel to suppress vegetative growth in these hard-to-control areas.

🌱 2. Landscape Management & Weed Control

Unkempt lots pose fire hazards, lower property values, and create eyesores. Homeowners are responsible for:

  • Clearing dead trees (both standing and fallen).
  • Eradicating noxious weeds, specifically Canada thistle and ox-eye daisy.
  • Proper upkeep to help reduce home insurance costs and maintain community beauty.

📜 3. Compliance & Construction Codes

  • 2025 Colorado Wildfire Resiliency Code: This 43-page state mandate applies to all existing and planned homes within Purgatory Metro District. If you are building or remodeling, ensure your architect and contractor have a copy and follow these strict requirements.
Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our community safe and beautiful!
